FLASH IMPLEMENTATION PART 2

OSCULATOR WAS SUCCESSFUL!

I could only test with one wii remote cause all the others are flat battery and charging, however I figured out how to assign them to keyboard buttons.

I tested the letter 'x' on the one wiimote and it successfully increases the player's score by 10 points on the flash program.

Now to the group, we all have a little bit of piece of mind, and relief. Me and Nick will set up the entire game at my house tomorrow and test it.

Now please let me move on to my other assignments guys, I'm a bit behind now!! Gotta do that Games Studio!

Cheers,

FLASH IMPLEMENTATION PART 1

OK GUYS! THE FINISH LINE IS WITHIN REACH! I MANAGED TO SUCCESSFULLY PROGRAM A FLASH PROGRAM THAT WILL BOTH TALLY SCORES AND HAVE A COUNTDOWN TIMER FROM 1 MINUTE!

Let me say first: I was about to give up. LOL

I volunteered to do the flash side of the exertion game because last year I did a whole years worth of websites, games and animations using flash, however it was with actionscript 1 programming language, and as you know we are now up to AS3.

Didn't think it was going to be too hard because I thought there wouldn't be much difference.

BOY WAS I WRONG!

I spent the entire morning and afternoon today teaching myself AS3 and it was sooo hard. Like stressed out to the max! Thankgod we are doing programming with java at uni because it helped to have a background understanding of programming syntax, plus knowing the basics of AS3 due to my experience with AS1.

Alas, it is finished. We now have a working timer that countdowns from 60 seconds (Nick said we should give players one minute to try to get the most points), and also a tally which displays the player's score. They are all triggered from keyboard presses:

x = ten points
s = twenty points
d = fifty points
f = seventy points
g = one hundred points

so far if you press these buttons on the keyboard the right amount of points keeps getting added to the score. however i will then use OSCulator to trigger wiimotes with the successive key buttons.

in terms of the timer, there is a start, stop and reset button (space bar) and a pause button (key letter z).

A big thanks goes out to Nick Sestan for providing me with Flash CS5 (actually the whole CS5 Master Collection for that matter ^^), and to all the wonderful people on the internet who have provided me with their tutorials.

Now on to OSCulator!

The final countdown.

As with pretty much everything else at uni this coming week is crunch time for our exertion game.
We have decided to call it Spongeoline, making something of a focal point out of the protective sponges.
So, what are we all doing to get this off the ground?
Estelle- Is doing the coding this weekend, with assistance from Nick Se (and others?) for some initial testing.
Nicks-Both Nicks are going to be trying to get in touch with some media. Floyd suggests using emails and sending them to editors of newspapers/magazines/websites etc. It might be a good idea to invite them to demo night but make sure you give a nice speel about why our game is good ie: combats obesity in a fun way, allows strangers to compete, makes sponges fun again etc. Also include the flier for the demo night?
Mickey- Is working on our poster
Candy-buying the sponges + cardboard + Velcro or tabs for tomorrow so Estelle and co can use them to test. Also making another blog connected to this account to be our games 'website'.

Melbourne central demo- We're planning to have a demo on Wednesday at Melbourne central where we will be able to collect footage and photos for our presentation. Estelle will bring the game stuff, Nick Se will bring some music to play, Candy will bring some paper and a text and her camera, Nick Sa will bring his showmanship and Mickey will bring his video camera.
I'm not sure what time we are doing this on Wednesday. If we decided already let me know else suggest on here or we'll sort it out later.
Nick is then going to edit our video like last time which we will somehow shove onto the blog while Mickey finishes up the poster.

Ok everyone. MAN YOUR BATTLE STATIONS *sigh*

PS. Here is the blog for our game:
http://spongeoline.blogspot.com/
You can get to it via our profile from this blog or follow the link here. Same account as this blog.

DOING STUFF

We have two weeks left to finish this but I think its looking good as long as we all keep our minds on whatever it is we are doing.
We had some good progress today and have decided on our game as well as how we will implement it. The game will involve the trampoline placed near a wall. The object of the game will be to jump as high as possible to touch different spots on the wall. The spots will be marked by Wii motes with sponges over them for protection. When pressed they will return a score to a program written in flash which Estelle is writing.
The wiimotes will be stuck on with velcro I guess.I'll have a look for some this weekend. I was thinking we should have a day where we take the game our and set it up for people to try, maybe in melbourne central or somewhere? We could get some great footage. To that end I really hope we can get this finished in a short time. I was also thinking that we should do some contacting of media to see if we can get published. Floyd said it is a simple matter of emailing editors of magazines/newspapers/blogs/etc. But I'll bring that up later. If you guys haven't read this by next Thursday I'm going to kill you :)

I TOTALLY BOUGHT A NEW TRAMPOLINE!!!!

YES, IT IS TRUE, WE HAVE FINALLY ACQUIRED ONE =]

And to my bitter disappointment, Rebel Sport did NOT have any in stock (I checked there first), so they really have failed to prove themselves as a genuine sports store, as I had feared. However on the bright side the trampolines they were selling were going for $70, and the one I bought was $40!!!

Alas, it was Kmart that proved themselves loyal to team cake! Good on ya ;]

For those who had fears of the OH+S, this trampoline has a safety cover around the springs, so all good and quite convenient for us I reckon!

As far as costs goes, I'm happy to pay the full 40 dollars myself and then keep the fun fun fun afterwards, so long as it doesnt BREAK on demo night that is (someone has to, and please pleaseeee let me keep it, it was my childhood dream to have one and my mum was too much of a tightass to give me one. Had to bloody wait till I was 18 so I could buy myself one =[).

It's a meter in diameter which is sort of ideal, it came in a medium sized box so I haven't assembled it yet (BELIEVE ME I WANT TO, IT'S SITTING IN MY ROOM DAMMIT AND IT'S BLOODY TEMPTING). Should I wait till we collaborate as a group to assemble it?

So now team, one challenge down, now moving on to Phidgets.....

Thanks,
Estelle =]

Implementation Development with Phidgets and Trampoline

Ok looks like Estelle is gonna start this new thread yayyyy! =]

Actually the reason why I have done this is because I've taken over a bit of the responsibility this weekend as far as implementation goes. For the rest of the group who are not aware, Candy and I approached Floyd in the last lecture and aquired the UBER box of Phidgets; they are now in my possession.

This means that we have to start learning how to use the damn things -_- Candy did a presentation on Arduino (similar thing) so there's a start; she knows the basic concept of it. The reason why I have taken them for the weekend is because Nathan is very tech-savvy so I thought we would experiment and try to figure them out Saturday night. However, I would like to encourage the team as a whole to do a bit of research and learn how to use them. Sure we have Luke in our course, but we also want to do this as a group, help each other out, and we'll even learn a hell of a lot if we teach ourselves. Floyd explained a little bit about the software used to connect them to the laptop but I still need to get my head around it :S

When we start learning how to use them, we can further understand what exactly it is we want to DO with them. We need to figure out a relationship between the tramploine and technology....

On that note, I just wanted to recap my appaling disappointment in so-called "Big" W, and the previously thought "major" Target franchise, for their surprising lack of tri-mam-pol-ines (to quote Homer J. Simpson). Myself, Candy, Mikey and Nick Sanders ran half way around Burke St and God knows where trying to find one until poor Nick suffered severely in health =[ Candy suggested buying one online, however I will go to Rebel Sport tomorrow night after Uni; if Rebel doesn't have one, I'll be damned if I were to call that place a "sports store". If I do obtain one, I'll buy it and we'll split the cost even alright people?

Please use this thread to post whatever reasearch/understanding/scripts/software you have found regarding the Phidgets. It would help me a lot on Saturday night. Also post any thoughts/ideas on how we might use them, in relation to our fun trampoline.
